Beeson & Buchanan elected to ONA board of trustees

Frank Beeson, Greater Miami Valley Newspaper Group publisher for Brown Publishing Co., and Margaret Buchanan, president and publisher of The Cincinnati Enquirer, are the newest members of the ONA board of trustees. They were elected to three-year terms during the ONA Annual Meeting on Feb. 13.

On the ONA board, Beeson succeeds Joe Ellingham, vice president of Brown Publishing Co., in representing weekly newspapers. Buchanan succeeds Tom Callinan, editor of The Enquirer, in representing daily newspapers of more than 50,000 circulation. Ellingham had served on the board since 2003 and Callinan since 2004.

As group publisher, Beeson is responsible for the operations of three newspaper divisions within Brown Publishing—the I-75 Daily Newspapers (Troy, Piqua and Sidney), the Greene County Dailies (Xenia, Fairborn and Beavercreek) and the Times Community Newspapers (9 weekly community newspapers in suburban Dayton and Skywriter, weekly publication of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base).

Prior to accepting a position with Brown Publishing, Beeson served as president of the Wayne Development Council in Wayne County, Ohio. From 1983 to 1998 he was with Dix Communications in Wooster, most recently serving as general manager of the Wooster Daily Record. His previous newspaper experience includes a stint as assistant publisher of Bowling-Moorman Publications, a northern Dayton area community newspaper group that was sold and is now a part of the Times Community Newspapers.

Beeson received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kent State University.

Buchanan was named to her current position at The Enquirer in May 2003, the first woman in this role since the founding of the newspaper in 1841. Previously, she was president and publisher of The Idaho Statesman and vice president of Gannett’s Pacific Newspaper Group (1999-2003), president and publisher of the Star-Gazette in Elmira, NY (1996-1999), and advertising director and marketing director at the Rockford (IL) Register Star (1987-1996).

Buchanan began her career in 1986 as a general executive with The Enquirer, after working in sales positions with IBM and Cincinnati Bell. She is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA in finance.

Buchanan’s community involvement includes serving on the boards of the University of Cincinnati and the Fine Arts Fund. She was the first woman to chair the Fine Arts Fund’s 2007 $12-million community-wide campaign. In 2006 she was recognized by the YWCA as a “Career Woman of Achievement.”
