New collegiate newspaper contest announced
With the recent growth in campus newspaper memberships, ONA and The Ohio Newspapers Foundation have established a new annual contest formally called “The Collegiate Newspaper & Newspaper Web site Competition.” The deadline for entries in the inaugural competition is Oct. 30. Awards will be presented at the ONA Convention on Feb. 11, 2010 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Town Center.
“Students from Findlay University and Wright State University have won honorable mentions as unofficial entries in our Hooper Contest for professionally-published weekly newspapers, so we look forward to recognizing the good work of many more campus newspaper staffers,” stated Frank Deaner, executive director of ONA and the Foundation. “We also appreciate the guidance from Hillary Warren, faculty adviser to The Tan & Cardinal at Otterbein College, in helping us develop the details of this annual competition.
Collegiate newspaper members are eligible to enter any or all of seven topical classes that include news coverage, arts & entertainment, editorial writing, sports coverage, design, photojournalism and headline writing. Certificates for first, second and third places will be awarded. A point system will determine an overall “General Excellence” winner. In separate judging, “The Best Collegiate Newspaper Web site” will also be named.
Entries will be judged by a panel of professionals from ONA member newspapers. Winners will be notified in January, so collegiate newspaper staffers and their advisers will be able to plan for participating in the ONA Convention
“Because we want to assist our young collegiate members, this contest is considered a member service included with annual dues, thus there is no additional entry fee,” added Deaner. Any non-member campus newspaper may still enter this year’s contest by completing the ONA membership application by the Oct. 30 contest deadline.
Questions about the Collegiate Newspaper Competition should be directed to Deaner or Sue Bazzoli, manager, administrative services, at ONA.
Contest Open to All Campus Newspapers
Collegiate newspapers not currently ONA members may still enter this new contest by completing an application before the Oct. 30 contest deadline. ONA’s professional members are encouraged to contact faculty advisers in their area.
