The ONA/ONF Newspaper in Education Committee is rolling out its 2013 literacy project. Due to the popularity of the 2012 serial story “Far Out Family Blog”, Ohio NIE is back with another Ohio-authored-and-illustrated adventure. The 2013 serial features historical figures from our state, current events and technology…even time travel. But just how the story ends, and the title, is up to newspaper readers.

Readers will meet the characters, be drawn into their story and left to resolve Chapter Four’s cliffhanger through a writing contest. This year’s project includes the first four chapters, original illustrations, end-of-chapters questions and activities, vocabulary words, and the template for a finish-the-story contest announcement.

Ohio newspapers may download the materials for print and e-edition by visiting http://www.ohionewspapers-in-ed.org/node/8. And don’t forget that NIE week will be held from March 4 to 8.

The story was created by Bowling Green State University’s Amanda McGuire Rzicznek. Each chapter was illustrated by Peter Burroughs, a Bowling Green High School student. The 2013 NIE project committee included Karmen Concannon (Bowling Green Sentinel Tribune), Darrell Dawson (Columbus Distpatch) and Anne Coburn-Griffis (The Lima News).
