Enquirer Sports’ columnist Paul Daugherty took first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors for newspaper columnists in the 75,001-175,000 circulation category for 2013 in an announcement made on Tuesday.
Sports editors from around the country selected Doc over 53 other columnists in the circulation category. Doc finished second in the category two years ago.
The sports editors highlighted five columns from the past year that showed both national relevancy and local appeal.
The group mentioned Doc’s Jason Collins column after the NBA players announcement that he was gay as a standout. Doc’s column applauded Collins’ decision, but also asked a bigger question: How good a person is he?
The other columns that formed part of the winning entry were on topics as diverse as Reds first baseman Joey Votto, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer Meyer, former Reds batboy Ted Kremer and Elder High School’s undersized football player Jack James.
Doc was also named a Top 10 finalist in the Feature Writing category for his story on former Bengals great Reggie Williams and his battle to save his lege. The order of finish for that category will be announced on Thursday afternoon.
