"We're Living in the Matrix" sunshine law webinar

To mark Sunshine Week 2017, the Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Ohio Coalition for Open Government will offer a free webinar on how best to use Ohio’s laws on open records and open meetings. Titled "We're Living in the Matrix," the sunshine law webinar will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 16.

Although there is no charge, pre-registration is required and can be completed by clicking here.

The webinar is open to anyone, including journalists and the general public, who wants to gain a better understanding of Ohio’s laws to ensure transparency and accountability of government.

“In these times, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Sunshine Week than to empower more people to utilize our laws to ensure transparency and accountability in government,” said Dennis Hetzel, executive director of the Ohio News Media Association and president of OCOG.

The session will be led by Hetzel and Gary Daniels, chief lobbyist for the ACLU of Ohio and a frequent presenter on sunshine law issues.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Basics of Ohio open records and open meetings laws and pitfalls to avoid
  • Examples of how to “think like a reporter” and get what you need
  • What to do when the answer is “no”
  • How to utilize Ohio’s new low-cost, expedited process to handle request denials
  • Time to answer participants’ questions

Sunshine Week is an annual, national event started 12 years ago by the American Society of News Editors and the Reporters Committee of Freedom of the Press to celebrate access to information and what it means to communities. To learn more, go to http://sunshineweek.rcfp.org/.
