ONA and AdOhio welcome summer interns

By Courtney Stanley, ONA Intern
and Sydney Garverick, AdOhio Intern

The Ohio Newspaper Association and AdOhio members may have started receiving phone calls and emails from a couple unfamiliar names recently — that’s because the Ohio Newspapers Foundation has hired its two new summer interns: Courtney Stanley at the ONA and Sydney Garverick at AdOhio.

Both Stanley and Garverick grew up just outside Columbus’s I-270 loop in Pickerington and Powell, respectively, and have temporarily returned to the Columbus area from the University of Cincinnati and Denison University. The new interns are keeping busy with various projects from the ONA and AdOhio.

Courtney StanleyStanley, the publications/PR intern for the ONA, graduated from UC in May with degrees in journalism and creative writing. While at UC, she worked as the online editor at The News Record, UC’s student newspaper, where she spent her time managing its website and social media accounts in addition to writing and editing content. Stanley worked to improve the quality and quantity of TNR’s online content as well as transition the editorial focus from print to a larger online audience. Stanley also interned at Cincinnati Magazine as an editorial and digital intern. In March, she spent two weeks in India with an environmental journalism class to report on water redevelopment in rural areas.

During her time with the ONA, Stanley is working on a variety of projects, such as writing for the biweekly Bulletin, creating a database and analysis of Ohio Supreme Court decisions involving open government for the Ohio Coalition for Open Government and developing a social media strategy for OCOG.

Stanley will move to London, England after her internship and hopes to continue traveling and writing about environmental issues around the world.

Sydney GarverickGarverick, the advertising intern for AdOhio, is looking forward to her senior year at Denison in the fall and graduating in May 2016. Garverick is pursuing a double major in psychology and communication with a concentration in organizational studies. Throughout her time at Denison, Garverick has kept busy as a player on the varsity volleyball team; a member of the Delta Gamma sorority; a psychology, communication and economics tutor; and a campus tour guide. In the fall she will start a new position in the Denison Admissions Office as a senior interviewer for prospective students, and as a psychology fellow, assisting professors with research and tutoring younger students in the department. Earlier this summer, Garverick participated in a selective, month-long Denison program called Organizational Studies, where a group of 20 students traveled to New York and San Francisco to meet with alumni in various industries, complete projects and work on a consulting project through Deloitte.

At AdOhio, Garverick has ongoing projects to complete by the end of her internship. She is creating promotional materials, generating new business opportunities, creating display ads for clients and producing a video on “Who We Are” for AdOhio.

Upon leaving her internship, Garverick plans to pursue a career in advertising and public relations: writing, creating and publishing in several different media outlets.

The paid internships are provided by the Ohio Newspapers Foundation and last for 10 weeks. Both interns say they would welcome inquiries from any ONA member about possible employment. They can be reached at courtneystanley92@gmail.com and Sydney.garverick@gmail.com.
