Government relations, including lobbying, is one of ONA’s most important roles as the trade association for Ohio’s daily and weekly newspapers and their affiliated Web sites. ONA does much more than represent the business interests of its members. The association also serves the news media and all Ohio citizens as a watchdog and advocate for open government. That includes laws, rulings and regulations related to open meetings, public records and open courts.
The ONA offers a number of how-to guides to improve the ability of journalists to research and tell compelling stories of interest to their communities.
One of the member services available to all employees of ONA-member newspapers is the “Legal Hotline.” The hotline is staffed by attorneys at the Cleveland office of the law firm of Baker & Hostetler.
The ONA offers a number of discounts for members, including discounts for Local Media Association trainings, discounted subscriptions to Public Insight Data, discounted libel insurance, and more.
The ONA Workers Compensation Group Rating Program allows for BWC premium savings for ONA member papers. The program has provided savings of more than $4 million to member employers since the program’s inception. The rate of premium savings has topped more than 75% in many program years.
