ONA offers latest advice on design, local online video

Don’t miss your opportunity to gather the latest tips in designing your newspaper at the Sept. 24 training session in Pickerington.

Instructor Kevin Dilley of Creative Circle Media is a 19-year newspaper veteran with varied writing, design, editing, photojournalism, management and teaching experience. Topics will include:

  • Designing for Readers: Back to basics and then beyond. Doing smart, reader-focused design; avoiding gimmicks and taking risks when content warrants such a move.
  • Photo Content & Photo Editing: Often great design is simply solved with strong content — storytelling photos, great headlines and stories using those pieces well.
  • Alternative Story Forms: How this trend is impacting the design of newspapers. How designers can use it at their newspapers effectively.
  • A Review of Recent Research: Northwestern Readership Report, Poynter Eye Track, Newspaper Next.

In 2001, Dilley joined Creative Circle after a two-year stint at The Providence Journal where he was a photo editor, assignment editor and designer. His previous experience includes five years at The Monroe Evening News in Michigan where he was a staff photographer, photo editor, designer and copy editor.
