As announced in the Oct. 31 Bulletin, ONA is now accepting nominations for the newly-established William Maxwell Award. This is the last of several activities planned in observance of ONA’s 75th anniversary. We’d like to conclude the year-long observance with announcement of the first recipient at the 2009 ONA Convention in February.

Named for the publisher of “The Centinel,” the first newspaper in the Northwest Territory in 1793, the Maxwell Award is intended to recognize outstanding individual achievement in the advancement of the newspaper profession. Nominees may come from inside the newspaper business or from other professions.

Nominations should describe an individual’s accomplishments in any one of several areas that include defense of the First Amendment, championing the public’s right to know, service to the community, technical innovations, acts of heroism, special efforts on behalf of employees or advancement of journalism principles or journalism education.

Download the nomination form at www.ohionews.org/pdf/williammaxwell.pdf. Deadline for nominations is Dec. 15.
