Northwest Ohio woman is $1,000 winner
Susan Godzak, of Van Buren, OH, is the winner of $1,000 in a drawing conducted in connection with NewspapersMakeHistory.com, ONA’s 75th anniversary Web site. ONA President Ken Douthit drew the winning name from those Ohioans who have visited the special Web site and have voted on the top Ohio newspaper stories of the past 75 years.
Godzak, who is a medical lab technologist with the Blanchard Valley Health System, says she went to the ONA site because of her interest in history and a link from her online newspaper, The Findlay Courier. “My oldest daughter Kathleen is majoring in history in college and my husband works for a library so we enjoy history as a family,” says Godzak. “I was interested in reading about the Ohio events on the site.”
Godzak’s husband Jeffrey is assistant director of human resources at the Toledo/Lucas County Library. Her daughter Kathleen, one of four children, is in her second year at Bowling Green State University.
Since she works in an oncology practice in Findlay, Godzak says she goes to The Courier’s Web edition every weekday and reads the print edition at home on weekends. “Working four days a week, I find the web newspaper is quick and convenient,” she says. Being a native of western Pennsylvania, Godzak says she also goes online to follow news of her hometown.
Godzak was presented her winner’s check at The Courier’s offices just a few days before Christmas. “The money will go towards a happy Christmas and whatever’s left over will go towards a spring vacation,” she said. Courier Publisher Karl Heminger, an ONA trustee, joined Executive Director Frank Deaner in presenting the check.
The ONA anniversary Web site, which features 75 different historical newspaper pages, will continue in operation through February 2009. A tabulation of voting on the 75 Ohio news events will be released on Dec. 29. The Godzak family will be guests of ONA at the opening reception of the ONA Convention on Feb. 11.
