Jay SmallONA Training sessions in May offer the latest tips in video shooting and editing, Web site readership and circulation.

Randy Walk, multimedia producer with The Columbus Dispatch, and Bob Stewart, associate director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, will lead the video shooting and editing session in Athens on May 1.

Whether you are a seasoned photojournalist or an online editor, this hands-on workshop will improve your shooting and editing skills specifically for online presentation of video. By the end of the workshop, participants will have at least one video story completed and uploaded (on Google or YouTube) that can be used on your newspaper’s site.

Movie editing will be completed using iMovie 6 on Apple computers in a Ohio University journalism school computer lab.

On May 6, Jay Small, executive director of content and product development for Scripps Interactive Newspapers Group, will share ways

to increase readership during the “Growing Audience with your Web Site” training session in Pickerington.

Small will show attendees how to make traditional news content work online, online-only content forms and methods, and ways to manage reader interactivity such as comments and message boards.

For the latest circulation strategies, ONA is providing Lance Gayle Pryor, vice president of audience growth and distribution for Media General, and Mike Zinser from the Zinser law firm for a May 13 session also in Pickerington.

In the morning, Pryor will cover circulation pricing, distribution opportunities, single-copy marketing and Audit Bureau of Circulations changes and the likely impact on sales efforts.

Zinser will follow in the afternoon with a primer on circulation laws and regulations and discuss emerging legal issues.
