Post offices in Lyons, Metamora, and Pettisville are included in a preliminary list of 13,000 rural post offices nationwide targeted by the U.S. Postal Service for reduced hours or closure. The list is the result of a two-year USPS “Postal Plan” initiated in 2012 to save money. The list calls for the three local post offices to reduce daily retail hours from eight to six.
USPS is holding community meetings in all of the targeted locations, offering the options of cutting back hours, shutting down the current office and opening a smaller office or permanently closing the office and providing service at another location or via curbside delivery.
A decision is usually made about 30 days after the community meeting is held.
