A new downloadable and searchable document, “Common Issues in Ohio Advertising,” is now available in the “members only” area of the Ohio Newspaper Association website.
We think this is going to be a terrific resource to have at your fingertips and a valuable extension of the “legal hotline” service that is part of your ONA membership. Topics covered include everything from libel in advertising to fair housing, political advertising and much more. You’ll also learn, by the way, that you shouldn’t mention Santa Claus in an alcohol ad. You can use the guide to provide guidance to many of your key advertisers.
It was past time to update and expand the information available “7-24” at our website to provide guidance on the most common advertising-related questions we receive. The guide will be updated periodically as we receive new (or better) information.
On Page 29 of the guide, you will find a one-page summary of the most frequently asked questions. You may want to print this page separately and distribute to key staff members.
I want to particularly thank ONA Counsel Lou Colombo and his colleagues at Baker Hostetler in Cleveland for their ongoing support and thoughtful review of the draft of this guide. When we can’t answer a member question or need to confirm the advice we plan to give, they provide great support.
One of the most satisfying aspects of our work is helping members when they need advice – or at least we can provide a place to start when you have a problem. As always, your feedback is welcome. Contact me with questions and comments.
